Macy's carelessly tosses personal information in trash.

This story comes out of St. Louis, MO by TV station KTVI-FOX2. The story reports that back in the fall of 2009 a reporter working for the Missouri Lawyers Weekly found papers containing credit card numbers in the open trash dumpsters outside of Macy's department store. In response Macy's started using trash dumpsters with lids.

Fast forward to February 2010 and the same reporter found more papers containing personal information outside of the same Macy's department store. Macy's response was that it appeared a homeless person dug into the trash in order to create a bed out of those papers.

Finance company throws personal information in dumpster

This story comes from TV station KTAL 6 from the ArkLaTex area of the United States. A reporter found personal information in the dumpster of a finance company. The personal information included social security numbers, account statements and personal addresses. The local police say no crime was committed because throwing away personal information is not illegal.

ACORN Dumps Documents instead of Shredding.

This story from NBC Los Angeles. It seems that in addition to providing inappropriate financial advice community organizing group ACORN allegedly dumps sensitive documents into the trash. Rather than shredding the documents which contain individual's sensitive and personal financial information the San Diego office of ACORN allegedly dumped about 20,000 documents into an ordinary trash dumpster.

This story arises from the 2009 New York Yankees "ticker-tape" parade following their Baseball World Series Championship. It seems that some New York City office workers starting tossing files and documents out the window when they couldn't get ahold of confetti. Here's a story from a Maryland TV station. WMAR conducted an investigation of a local bank and discovered instead of shredding all customer information in some cases the bank simply tossed personal information in the trash.
